As November comes to a close, I want to share updates on what has been another busy and fulfilling month. From discussions in Westminster to community events across Pembrokeshire, I’ve been working hard to represent our constituency and address key local and national issues.
In Parliament
Chairing the Celtic Sea APPG
This month, I had the privilege of chairing a meeting of the All-Party Parliamentary Group on the Celtic Sea. The APPG plays a vital role in promoting collaboration across the Celtic Sea region, particularly in areas like renewable energy, fisheries, and coastal development. We discussed strategies for harnessing the region’s immense potential in floating offshore wind energy while ensuring benefits for local communities.
Port of Milford Haven Dinner
I was delighted to host a dinner in Parliament with representatives from the Port of Milford Haven. The Port is a cornerstone of Pembrokeshire’s economy, supporting energy infrastructure, fishing, and trade. Our discussions focused on how the UK Government can further support the Port’s ambitions, particularly with the energy transition and maintaining its competitive edge – regionally, nationally and internationally.
Meeting with RNIB
I met with the Royal National Institute of Blind People (RNIB) to discuss their priorities for improving accessibility, tackling discrimination, and ensuring equitable access to services for people living with sight loss. I’m committed to advocating for policies that create a more inclusive society for all.
Work with EFRA and Welsh Affairs Select Committees
As a member of both the Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (EFRA) and Welsh Affairs Select Committees, I’ve been actively contributing to inquiries this month. Through EFRA, I’ve been scrutinising issues such as food security, agricultural sustainability, and water quality. With the Welsh Affairs Committee, we’ve been examining the impact of national policies on Welsh communities. I remain committed to ensuring that the voices of Pembrokeshire residents are heard at the highest level.
Voting on the Assisted Dying Bill
This month, Parliament debated and voted on the Assisted Dying Bill. After much consideration and listening to constituents, I voted in favour of the Bill, which I believe strikes a compassionate balance while maintaining robust safeguards. It was a powerful day and showcased the very best of our Parliamentary system – a respectful debate and a vote that was done with great humility from all sides of the House.
In the Constituency
Cleddau River Group Roundtable
Protecting our natural environment is a top priority, and I was proud to host a roundtable with the Cleddau River Group. We discussed the ongoing challenges facing the Cleddau River, including pollution and habitat conservation. I will keep pushing to ensure that these vital waterways are protected for generations to come.
Meeting with Sandy Bears Children’s Charity
I was deeply moved by my visit to Sandy Bears Children’s Charity, which provides invaluable support to children and families coping with bereavement and trauma. The dedication shown by the staff to help young people through difficult times is inspirational, and I will continue advocating for the resources they need to sustain their vital work.
Meeting with FUW and NFU
I met with the Farmers' Union of Wales (FUW) and the National Farmers’ Union (NFU) to discuss key issues affecting our agricultural sector. The challenges to the industry are numerous – compliance with new regulations, bTB, changes to Agricultural Property Relief and Business Property Relief and the transition to the Sustainable Farming Scheme. However, I am committed to supporting farmers through this difficult period and will be advocating for policies that sustain and strengthen the agricultural sector in Pembrokeshire and beyond.
Financial Support Event
With the cost of living remaining the top concern for many people across Pembrokeshire, particularly as the winter months set it, I hosted a Financial Support Event to connect residents with practical advice and resources. It was fantastic to see so many people accessing the help they need, from budgeting tips to information on grants and benefits. I was grateful to both the Citizens Advice Bureau and Age Cymru for their attendance and for making the event a success.
Parliament Week at St Teilo’s and Saundersfoot CP Schools
I had the pleasure of visiting St Teilo’s School and Saundersfoot CP School during Parliament Week, talking to students about how democracy works and what it means to represent their community. Their curiosity and thoughtful questions were inspiring, and I hope I encouraged some future parliamentarians!
Remembrance Sunday
November is a time for reflection, and it was a privilege to take part in Remembrance Sunday services across Pembrokeshire. It was deeply moving to join with the community to honour those who gave their lives for our freedom.
As always, I’m here to listen and to act on your behalf. If there’s an issue you’d like to raise, please don’t hesitate to get in touch.
Warm regards,
Henry
